Shelling is an awesome hobby – but whether you’re combing shells off the beach directly or buying bulk seashells from a distributor, chances are you’ll have to clean them a little bit before you use them for either decorations or crafting. 

Today, we’re going to tell you guys some of the best ways to clean shells and how you can bring out their very best. Let’s jump right in!

Mix some bleach and water

While this isn’t the most natural way to clean your shells – it’s 100% the fastest AND most effective way of doing it. We recommend 1 tablespoon of bleach per gallon of water. Always start on the lower side with the bleach – if it’s not being as effective as you’d like it to be – you can always add a little more later on. 

Also – make sure you’re leaving the shells in a well-ventilated room or area and wear gloves! Bleach is strong stuff! Then, simply give the shells a few hours to soak. 

Next break out a disposable toothbrush

Rinse off the shells and then grab an old toothbrush. Gently brush over the outside of the shell. The bristles on the brush will also allow you to get into any crevices the bleach couldn’t get to and help you make sure the shell is thoroughly clean. Once you’re done, let the shells sit. 

Acrylic spray

One of the cooler hacks you can use to give a shell its best shine can be found in your garage in all likelihood – and that’s acrylic spray. Acrylic spray is used with rocks and other porous surfaces normally; but in this case- it’s great to use on the surface of a seashell. Simply spray some spray or rub a little mineral oil on them and you’ll be surprised at not only how well it will bring out the color of the shell, but also add some gleam and shine to it as well. 

Especially if you’re going to be putting the shells on display in a group or individually – you’ll really want to make sure you use this!
